In 2009 and 2010, in the midst of the recession, Kelley Construction Inc. spent $4 million to build its own office building, located on Lake Station Place off Plantside Drive.
Many thought it was a questionable project for a construction company at a time when the construction business was way, way down.
Joe Kelley admits they weren’t entirely wrong. “We lost 40 percent of our business in 2008 and ’09,” said the president and CEO of Louisville’s largest general contracting firm. “Several million dollars worth of work that we had on the boards got canceled. You can’t replace that.”
But he saw it as an opportunity. “There was no better time to bet on ourselves,” Kelley said. “Construction costs had dropped, we had our pick of sub-contractors, and we had money in the bank when no one else could get any capital.”
